Both are free at Total Alignment Charitable. Here’s how to know which one fits where you are right now.

If you’ve been putting off “dealing with your finances” because you’re not sure where to start, you’re not alone — and you don’t have to figure it out by yourself. Total Alignment Charitable (TA Charitable) is expanding our services to meet you exactly where you are, with two complementary options: financial coaching and financial planning. Both are delivered by volunteer Certified Financial Planners (CFPs), and both are completely free.

But they’re not the same thing, and knowing the difference can help you get the most out of either one.

What Is Financial Coaching?

Financial coaching is a short, focused conversation about one specific money question or concern. Think of it as triage, not a full workup. At TA Charitable, our coaching sessions run 15 or 20 minutes and are designed to give you clarity and a concrete next step — fast.

In a coaching session, a volunteer planner will:

  • Get a quick snapshot of your financial picture (income, expenses, debt, savings)
  • Understand the one thing you most want help with right now
  • Rank your priorities, whether that’s budgeting, debt, credit, saving, or something else
  • Point you toward practical tools and resources — a budgeting worksheet, a debt payoff tracker, credit report guidance, and more
  • Recommend a clear next step, whether that’s a resource, a referral, or enrolling in our full planning program

Financial coaching works well when you have a specific question, you’re just getting started and feel overwhelmed, or you want an outside perspective before making a decision. It’s low-commitment, action-oriented, and built for real life — no paperwork marathon required.

What Is Financial Planning?

Financial planning is the deeper, more comprehensive process. Rather than addressing one concern in isolation, a financial plan looks at your whole financial picture — income, debt, savings, goals, timeline, and how all the pieces connect — and builds a personalized roadmap to get you where you want to go.

At TAC, our free one-on-one financial planning program pairs you with a volunteer CFP who works with you over time to:

  • Build a full understanding of your financial situation and goals
  • Create a personalized plan addressing budgeting, debt, savings, credit, and more
  • Track progress and adjust the plan as your life changes
  • Provide ongoing accountability and support, not just a one-time conversation

Financial planning is the right fit when you’re ready to commit to a longer-term process, you have multiple financial goals that need to work together, or you already know you want structured, sustained support rather than a single check-in.

The Key Differences

Financial CoachingFinancial Planning
LengthOne session, 15–20 minutes12 weeks, ongoing
ScopeOne specific concernYour full financial picture
Best forQuick clarity, a specific question, getting unstuckLong-term goals, building a comprehensive plan
What you getA next step and relevant resourcesA personalized plan with ongoing support
CommitmentLow — one conversationHigher — regular sessions over time

Neither option is “better” than the other, they’re built for different moments. Coaching meets an immediate need. Planning builds toward a bigger picture. Many clients actually start with a coaching session and, once they’ve had a taste of what personalized guidance can do, choose to enroll in the full planning program.

Why Choose Coaching Over Planning (Or Vice Versa)?

Choose coaching if:

  • You have a specific question you need answered soon
  • You’re not sure you’re ready for a bigger commitment
  • You want to “test the waters” before diving into a full plan
  • You just need a resource, referral, or sanity check

Choose planning if:

  • You’re juggling multiple financial goals at once
  • You want someone in your corner over time, not just once
  • You’re ready to build (and stick to) a real strategy
  • Past one-off advice hasn’t stuck, and you want accountability

Both Are Free. Both Are Judgment-Free.

Whichever path fits you, the same principle holds true: financial progress is built one decision at a time. You don’t need perfect credit, a specific income level, or all the answers to start. You just need to take the first step.

Financial Coaching vs. Financial Planning: Which One Do You Need?
